More information is available in the manual, available in Room 311 (on the shelf above toro) or online, and from the VMWare Support site.
Log in to toro. Local access is preferable. VMware can run remotely, but it will be slower.
First time setup: run vmware-init. This needs only be done once. It will create and populate a directory named .vmware in your home directory.
Run: vmware. A window will come up with options to configure a virtual machine. You should see /usr/local/vmware/win2000Serv/win2000Serv.cfg in the box. Double click on that.
Click the Power On button. The virtual machine will boot and load Windows 2000.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Log in as user vmguest. There is no password on the account. Windows 2000 should now be running. Treat it just as if you were sitting in front of a real windows machine. In particular, it needs to be shut down properly.
Choose Shut Down... from the Start menu. (Yes, that is oxymoronic, but never mind.) Make sure "Shut down" is selected in the menu that subsequently appears. Wait until the message It is now safe to turn off your computer appears.
Click the Power Off button. Now it is safe to exit VMWare.
