Using the Computational Geometry Computational Resources
Here is the beginnings of a CGM Tips document.
Most of the CGM machines are running the Debian flavour of linux.
You can browse the available software packages for the Debian
machines using either
doc-central, or
dhelp.
In theory, each software package is available on each linux
machine. If you find otherwise, just drop a note to
cgm-help.
Email
Your email address is username@cgm.cs.mcgill.ca.
Do not omit cgm!
Email can be read using mutt or pine without any
special setup.
The machine cgm.cs.mcgill.ca operates both outgoing
(SMTP) and incoming (IMAP and POP) servers. Note, however, that this
machine is not reachable from outside of computer science.
Printing
We currently have two printers in the CGM lab (Room 311):
sake and chroma.
- Sake (HP LaserJet 2200dn). Sake prints on both sides of
the paper. Have a glance through the manual.
- Sake_ss (HP LaserJet 2200dn). This is the same as
sake, except that it prints single-sided.
- Chroma (Tektronix Phaser 350). Colour inkjet printer.
The colour ink is expensive, so access to this printer is restricted.
Those who wish to use it should speak to Godfried.
Special Hardware
Geometry Tools
- cdd 0.76a1: generate vertices of a convex polyhedron
using the double description method. Located in /labs/cgm/bin (linux)
or /labs/cgm/polytope/bin (alpha).
- CGAL 2.3: Computational Geometry and
Algorithms Library. Local compilation
notes .
- Cinderella 1.2: interactive geometry
software. Located in /labs/cgm/bin (linux).
- Surface Evolver 2.14: an
interactive program for the study of surfaces shaped by surface
tension and other energies. See the example files in /labs/cgm/share/docs/evolver-2.14/fe.
Located in /labs/cgm/bin (linux).
- Geomview 1.8.1:
interactive viewer for geometrical objects. Located in /usr/bin
(linux). The alpha machines (mutt and jeff) have an older
version (1.6.1)
located in /labs/cgm/bin.
- LEDA 4.2: Library of Efficient Datatypes and
Algorithms.
- lrs 4.1: vertex/facet enumeration.
Located in /labs/cgm/bin (linux).
- Polymake 1.5.1: framework for
polytopes and polyhedra. The polymake programs for linux are located
in /labs/cgm/share/polymake-1.5.1/i686/bin. This should
already be on your path: check by trying to run polymake -v.
In order to compile a C++ program using the Polymake Template Library,
insert include /labs/cgm/share/polymake-1.5.1/i686/Makefile
into your Makefile.

1.2.1: graph visualization software. Located in /labs/cgm/bin
